Target Audiences

Social Profiling
Social Profiling is the categorisation of people into different groups based on their jobs. The categories include:
·         A - Higher managerial, well paid professionals e.g. judges
·         B - Middle management, fairly well paid professionals e.g. doctors
·         C1 - Skilled non-manual workers e.g. senior managers
·         C2 - Skilled workers e.g. electricians
·         D - Semi and unskilled workers e.g. postman
·         E - Lower level e.g. students
I believe that this grading system is an unfair inaccurate view of different social classes and acts as a form of discrimination. This form of choosing target audiences is not very practical as higher paid professionals in category A may have the same interest as a student in category E even though they are placed at different ends of the spectrum.

Demographic Profiling

Demographic Profiling is the categorisation of people into different groups based on age, gender, race, location and sexuality. In my opinion I believe that this is a better system than social profiling as people of the same age and gender are more likely to have similar common interest for example teenage girls may prefer romantic comedies based is a high school whereas middle aged men are more likely to enjoy action packed films.

Psychographic Profiling

Psychographic Profiling is the categorisation of people into different groups based on a variety of example profiles, which includes ages, gender, hobbies and interests. This form of profiling allows the creator of the film to identify what their ideal target audience is and how their movie will attract them.

Thriller movies - target audiences
Target audiences of thriller movies are usually aged 15 and above due to the graphic content and complex storylines. Thrillers appeal to both male and female audiences and a variety of social classes due to the relatable characters used. I believe that demographic profiling works best when trying to allocate an ideal target audience therefore when planning for the opening scene of the thriller sequence it is important to take those factors into consideration.
