Thriller Sub-genres and Hybrid genres

This is a spider diagram I have created to show the different sub-genres within the thriller genre 

A sub-genre is a subcategory within a particular genre whilst a hybrid genre refers to a combination of two or more categories for example Romantic comedy. There are various sub-genres and hybrids within the thriller literature and film genre.  The combination of genres provides a mix of various elements and conventions associated with each category. There is a variety of genres thriller is associated with including romance which usually consist of a primary plot focus on a romantic relationship between two characters and a happy ending; but combined with the thriller genre several plot twists may occur. Sub-genres and hybrids allow different genre elements to merge and produce new innovative genres which are more appealing to today’s audiences. 

Psychological Thrillers
·          Focuses on the emotional and mental state of a character.
·          Reality verse perceptions are predominant themes.
·          Common elements include mind games, stalking, obsession, personality changes and murder.
·          Stream of consciousness is a literary technique often used in psychological thrillers to describe a characters thought processes in the conscious mind.
Espionage Thrillers
·          Involves the protagonist operating under a personal moral code which may or may not correspond with whosoever they work for.
·          The complex plot relies on twists and puzzles within puzzles. Betrayals, secrets, conspiracies, and revenge are recurrent themes.
·          Story lines tend to involve international implications and political threats.
Political Thrillers
·          Political thrillers often involve political terrorists and conspiracies to overthrow governments.
·          Government financial and corporate schemes lead to corruption.
·          Typical themes include dealing with current issues in the news: conspiracy, computer manipulation, corruption.
·          Danger is always involved and may have personal, national, or international links.
Sci-Fi Thrillers
·          Often involves suspense filled stories of experiments gone wrong.
·          The protagonist usually fights against corruption, conspiracy, or to stop a deadly virus or disease from spreading.
·          Usually based around future predictions and involves futuristic science and technology.
·          Characters tend to be supernatural and involved in dangerous situations.
